What do governors do?

School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors appoint the head teacher and deputy headteacher. In some schools the site is owned by the governing board. It is governors who hold the main responsibility for finance in schools, and it is governors who work with the headteacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources. Take a look at our role description, What do governors do?

Each individual governor is a member of a governing board, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the governing board; decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing board.

The role of the governing board is a strategic one, its key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school
  • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)

Governors' Blog - Why, how and what!

Why is there a Governors' Blog?
We believe that our Governors should be highly visible, approachable members of our school community. They have played an instrumental role in moving the school forward to outstanding over the last five years.

We believe that this blog will help to keep parents informed about the work that Governors do in the school and the role that they play.

How do I access it?
You can choose to subscribe to the blog, or follow the feed on the Facebook page. The blog can also be accessed through the school website.

What will it feature?
The blog will be used to:

  • communicate key aspects of the Governors' work in, and on behalf of, the school.
  • allow Governors to update parents on key information: for example school performance and minutes of Parent & Governor meetings.
  • to keep you informed about relevant changes in education that affect Primary schools.
We look forward to posting regularly and hearing your views on our new blog!
